Is there anything better than summer in Hampton Roads? 🌊
The sun is out, the ocean breeze is calling, and the "7 Cities" are absolutely buzzing with energy. If you’ve been following our blog, you know I love talking about the incredible homes and neighborhoods in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, and Hampton. But living here is about more than just finding the perfect property: it’s about the lifestyle.
As we wrap up July and head into the peak of summer, our local event calendar is packed. Whether you’re a longtime resident or you’re searching for your first home in the area, these festivals are the heart and soul of our community.
Here are the top 5 summer festivals you absolutely can’t miss in Hampton Roads for the rest of the 2026 season! ☀️
1. Virginia Beach Water Lantern Festival
Date: August 1, 2026
Location: Virginia Beach
If you’re looking for a "magic moment," this is it. The Water Lantern Festival is one of the most beautiful and peaceful events of the year. Hundreds of people gather at the water's edge to design their own eco-friendly lanterns, often covered with handwritten messages of hope, love, or remembrance.
As the sun sets, everyone releases their lanterns onto the water. Seeing the soft glow of thousands of lights floating together is a sight you won't forget. It’s incredibly family-friendly, with food trucks and music to enjoy while you work on your lantern. 🏮

👉 Pro Tip: Buy your tickets early! This event often sells out, and you’ll want to make sure you have your lantern kit ready to go before the sunset launch.
2. Summerween in the NEON District
Date: August 1, 2026
Location: Norfolk
Can’t wait until October for spooky season? Norfolk has you covered! Summerween is a quirky, creative street festival held in the vibrant NEON (New Energy of Norfolk) Arts District.
Think of it as Halloween with a tropical twist. You’ll see people dressed as "summer ghouls" or wearing flower crowns with skeleton face paint. The district’s famous murals provide the perfect backdrop for costume contests, local art vendors, and themed cocktails at nearby spots. It’s a great way to explore one of Norfolk’s most artistic neighborhoods while supporting local creators. 🎃🌺

3. Norfolk Waterfront Jazz Festival
Date: August 21–22, 2026
Location: Town Point Park, Norfolk
For the music lovers, the Norfolk Waterfront Jazz Festival is a legendary tradition. This two-day event brings national and regional jazz artists to the beautiful stage at Town Point Park, right on the Elizabeth River.
There is nothing quite like sitting on a lawn chair with a cold drink, feeling the river breeze, and listening to world-class jazz as the sun dips below the horizon. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet totally relaxed: it’s the ultimate "chill" summer weekend. 🎷

4. Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championship (ECSC)
Date: Late August 2026
Location: Virginia Beach Oceanfront
You can’t talk about summer in Virginia Beach without mentioning the ECSC. This is the world’s second-longest continuously run surfing contest, and it is a massive celebration of beach culture.
Even if you aren’t a surfer, there is so much to do. The festival features beach volleyball, cornhole tournaments, live music on the sand, and huge vendor tents with all the latest surf gear. The energy at the oceanfront during ECSC week is electric. It’s a true staple of the Hampton Roads lifestyle. 🏄♂️

5. American Music Festival
Date: August 28–30, 2026 (Labor Day Weekend)
Location: Virginia Beach Oceanfront
To cap off the summer, the American Music Festival brings major national recording artists to the oceanfront for a three-day bash. From rock and country to pop and R&B, there’s a stage for every musical taste.
The main stage is literally built on the sand, so you can dance with your toes in the water. It’s the perfect grand finale to the summer season before the kids head back to school and things start to cool down. 🎸🎤
