- The Peninsula: Includes Hampton and Newport News (and our neighbors in Yorktown).
Pro Tip: 🔍 Beware the Bridge-Tunnels! The HRBT (Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel) and the MMTT (Monitor-Merrimac) are the lifelines of the region, but they can be major bottlenecks. Most military families prefer to live on the same side of the water as their duty station to keep their daily commute under 30 minutes.
Finding Your Base: Where to Live Based on Your Orders
Choosing a neighborhood in Hampton Roads is usually a balancing act between your commute, your budget (BAH), and your lifestyle needs. Here’s a quick guide to the most popular spots for our local installations:
⚓ Naval Station Norfolk (NS Norfolk)
As the largest naval base in the world, NS Norfolk is the heart of the region.
- Close and Convenient: Look at Larchmont or Ghent in Norfolk. These are historic, walkable neighborhoods with amazing local food and a very short drive to the gates.
- Suburban Comfort: Many families choose Western Branch in Chesapeake. You get top-rated schools and more house for your money, with a very manageable commute.
✈️ NAS Oceana & Dam Neck Annex
If you’re in Virginia Beach, you’re in the land of "The Sound of Freedom."
- The Sweet Spot: Great Neck and Red Mill are perennial favorites. They offer fantastic schools, modern suburban layouts, and are just minutes from the beach.
- Great Value: Check out Salem or Kempsville. These areas offer established homes and central access to almost everywhere in the city.
🛡️ Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE) & Coast Guard Base Portsmouth
- Langley/Eustis: Most families stick to the Peninsula in Hampton or Newport News. The Fox Hill area of Hampton is incredibly popular for its community feel and proximity to the base.
- Portsmouth/Shipyards: If you're stationed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard or the Coast Guard base, Portsmouth offers charming historic homes, while Suffolk provides a more rural, quiet lifestyle with plenty of new construction.
